World Economy at Risk as Global Stability Weakens, Says BIS

The world economy is at a critical juncture, says the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), more commonly referred to as the "central bank for central banks." In its annual report published on Sunday, BIS cautioned that the world is headed for a new era of uncertainty as trade wars, political tensions, and elevated debt levels propel the global economy.

Agustín Carstens, the departing BIS chief, stated that the economic order is facing severe stress as nations are drifting away from cooperation and toward conflict. "We are at a crossroads," Carstens replied. "This is a new age of uncertainty, and it's putting public trust in governments and financial institutions under pressure."

Increasing Threats from Trade Wars and Geopolitics

One of the top worries for the BIS is the effect of increasing trade protectionism, especially the trade tensions spearheaded by the United States. With President Donald Trump's July 9 tariff deadline looming, global markets are in suspense.

The top BIS officials said long-time trade relationships are deteriorating, and nations are beginning to look after their own interests. It could be damaging to productivity, cause supply chain disruption, and reverse global growth, they added.

Hyun Song Shin, the chief economist at BIS, also mentioned that the world is becoming increasingly vulnerable to economic shocks. Climate change, political tensions, and aging populations are making recovery more difficult when crises occur.

Inflation, Debt, and a Weakening Dollar

The BIS report also spoke of inflation fears after the COVID-19 pandemic. Although inflation has moderated in most countries, people's expectations regarding increasing prices are still high. This persisting fear may render future inflation more difficult to manage.

Another serious problem is public debt. Governments have borrowed a lot of money to spur their economies in recent years. But with interest rates on the rise, BIS reports that most countries are now at greater risk of financial loss.

"This trend has to stop," Carstens cautioned. He added that increased military expenditure in several nations might push debts even higher, rendering it challenging for governments to react to future slumps.

The BIS also pointed out the recent drop in the U.S. dollar, down around 10% since the beginning of 2025. Although some economists are interpreting this as a sign of a long-term move away from U.S. investments, according to Shin, it's premature to say. He mentioned that the drop could be the result of a short-term trading strategy instead of a significant departure from the dollar.

BIS Stands Strong Amid Global Uncertainty

In spite of the worldwide challenges, BIS delivered robust financial performance. The bank generated more than $1.2 billion in net profit and recorded a record high in currency deposits. According to Carstens, this demonstrates the BIS's ongoing robustness and high credit rating in international finance.

In the future, the BIS is going to increase its emphasis on financial risks, including the emergence of digital currencies such as stablecoins, which it warned against last month.

As Carstens prepares to retire, he goes out with a warning: global economic stability hangs in the balance, and central banks need to remain vigilant and unanimous in confronting the trials of the future.
