Authorities have taken a suspect into custody following a shooting at Brown University that resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to nine others on Saturday. The incident occurred inside an on-campus engineering facility amid final exam week. While the earlier shelter-in-place directive has been revoked certain zones remain off-limits as the inquiry proceeds.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, a data site, this shooting is the 389th mass shooting in the United States so far this year. The archive classifies shootings as events in which four or more individuals are killed or wounded.
The Shooter Began Shooting in the Middle of an Exam Review Session
The shooter began firing in a classroom at 4pm local time on Saturday within the Holley engineering building located on the eastern side of Brown's campus, according to officials. The building was hosting exams when the shooting occurred. The Barus and Holley engineering building is a seven-level structure that includes 117 laboratories, numerous classrooms and three lecture auditoriums.
An economics professor informed the public media station Ocean State Radio that the shooting took place during a review session for her class conducted by her teaching assistant. Rachel Friedberg mentioned, "He stated that the shooter entered through the doors and shouted something, though he couldn't recall what, and began firing. "Students began rushing attempting to flee from the shooter attempting to move in the stadium seats and individuals were shot " she continued. On Saturday officials stated they were initially uncertain about how the gunman entered the first-floor classroom. While the building's exterior doors were unlocked.
Two Killed, Nine Wounded in Assault
During the event, two students lost their lives. Nine more sustained injuries. Mayor Smiley informed reporters on Sunday that one individual remains in severe condition and seven others are stable in the hospital. He also mentioned that one person with injuries has been released.
The names of those who were killed or wounded have not been revealed, but Brown University President Christina Paxson mentioned in a news conference that every victim, whether deceased or injured, was a student. "This is a day that everyone in our community wished would never arrive. It is profoundly heartbreaking, for each of us " she expressed in the statement.
In a statement released on Sunday, the university said it was providing support to the families of the two students who died. "There are words of solace, for families grieving the loss of a child yet we will strive to do everything possible " Ms Paxson stated.
Suspect in His 30s Taken Into Custody
Authorities reported on Sunday that a suspect person was arrested in relation to the shooting. Authorities did not disclose the suspect’s identity. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez mentioned that information would be shared about the apprehended suspect. Noted that he was approximately in his 30s.
On Saturday authorities published CCTV footage showing a suspect dressed entirely in black walking away from the location of the shooting. No weapon can be seen in the footage. His face is not seen clearly. Authorities report that no gun was discovered following a search of the premises, on Saturday.
According to some witnesses he might have been wearing a camouflage mask when seen by the police. One individual was detained until authorities confirmed he was not involved in the shooting and was then freed.
Investigation Ongoing, with Campus Limitations Remaining in Effect
In a declaration issued by the university on Sunday Ms Paxson mentioned that certain parts of the campus remained off-limits while police pursued their inquiries. She stated that 2,000 students were relocated to secure places overnight and conveyed her heartfelt gratitude, towards the students and residents who welcomed them into their homes.
Brown University announced that all outstanding exams, papers and projects will not be conducted as planned. Brown University was one of the earliest higher education institutions in the United States and is in the Ivy League, a cluster of top universities in the northeastern part of the country.
The university, home to over 11,000 students, is located in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island 50 miles away from Boston and 180 miles distant from New York City. US President Donald Trump, addressing journalists upon his return to the White House after attending the Army and Navy football match, referred to the shooting as "a terrible thing".
"All we can do now is pray for the victims and those who sustained severe injuries " he continued. The assault occurred during a period on campus where students wrapped up the semester sitting for final exams and getting ready to leave for the holidays. Instead, two students will not return home as their families grieve their loss.
The shelter-in-place directive that confined students and staff for hours on Saturday has been lifted, yet the psychological impact will endure far beyond. Students who saw the shooting concealed themselves in terror and indeed the whole Brown community confronted a challenging journey, toward recovery.
