Prime Video Surprises Fans with ‘War of the Worlds’ Release Date

Prime Video has officially announced that it will release War of the Worlds on July 30, ending a long wait since the film was completed back in 2020. The film, which stars Ice Cube and Eva Longoria, is a fresh take on the classic H.G. Wells story and is told entirely through phones, computers, and security footage. Fans were surprised by the announcement, especially since the movie had been sitting unreleased for five years.

In an age where everyone is accustomed to experiencing the world through their screens, this latest War of the Worlds belongs. Rich Lee directs the film of Will Radford, Ice Cube, a cybersecurity agent who stumbles upon a bizarre alien threat. The film presents a haunting question: if aliens came to Earth today, would we get to know them only through our gadgets?

A New Approach to Retelling an Old Alien Classic

Rather than epic battle sequences or massive cities being annihilated, this War of the Worlds takes a different route. In what’s referred to as the “screenlife” format, the film presents all the action through digital screens, such as phones, laptops, and smart cameras. The filmmakers say this is the way most would actually experience a disaster in the modern world.

Regarding War of the Worlds, producer Timur Bekmambetov indicated, “In the old days, Orson Welles frightened people with radio. Nowadays, it’s all about what we’re seeing on screens. That’s where fear resides now.” This concept makes the film sound contemporary and more intimate.

Why the Film Took Five Years to Release

The movie was initially completed in 2020 and scheduled for theater release by Universal Pictures. But due to its one-of-a-kind style and the pandemic, the studio opted to delay. Marketing issues also kept it delayed over time. There were even spurious trailers on the internet featuring Tom Cruise, which left many fans wondering, “How did War of the Worlds come back?”

With Prime Video now having acquired it, the film is finally out in the world. This highly anticipated sci-fi thriller demonstrates how we live in the present and how we would make it through an invasion from above.
