Kennedy International Airport following the individual’s deportation from Israel, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Joseph Neumayer, 28, was taken into custody on May 25 by FBI agents. He faces charges of attempting to destroy the embassy by fire or explosive devices. The criminal complaint, recently unsealed in the Eastern District of New York, outlines the serious nature of the charges, which carry a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Prosecutors revealed that Neumayer arrived in Israel in April and, on May 19, attempted to ignite three improvised incendiary devices, commonly known as Molotov cocktails, at the embassy's Tel Aviv branch. Reports indicate that Neumayer behaved aggressively, even spitting on an embassy guard before fleeing the scene and abandoning his backpack containing the incendiary devices.
Israeli authorities quickly located and arrested Neumayer at his hotel and subsequently deported him to the U.S. Federal prosecutors also disclosed that Neumayer posted threatening messages on social media prior to the incident, including calls to "burn down the embassy" and threats directed at Americans and Western countries. Investigators believe he also posted threats against former President Donald Trump.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned the act, emphasizing the Department of Justice’s commitment to prosecuting such threats to American diplomats and interests abroad.
This arrest follows closely on the heels of a separate violent incident in Washington, D.C., where two Israeli embassy staff members were fatally shot outside a Jewish museum. Authorities have charged Elias Rodriguez, 31, with murder and weapons offenses. Both U.S. and Israeli officials have denounced the shooting, calling it a targeted act of violence.
The backdrop to these incidents is an intensifying conflict between Israel and Hamas. The ongoing military campaign has led to thousands of casualties and widespread displacement in Gaza, heightening tensions worldwide. The conflict has also sparked a rise in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents across the United States, prompting increased vigilance from law enforcement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the D.C. shooting as an act of hatred fueled by antisemitism and linked it to the increasingly hostile atmosphere related to the war in Gaza. Meanwhile, Netanyahu himself faces international legal scrutiny over alleged war crimes in the region, which Israeli leaders reject as politically motivated.
