US President Donald Trump announced that he is nearly done with several trade deals and will formally inform the countries of higher U.S. tariffs by July 9. Originally said to kick in at different rates starting immediately, the tariffs will now take effect on August 1. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the change, adding that Trump is still finalizing the exact rates, which will range from 10% to 50% on different goods.

By pushing the date a bit behind, the administration hopes to use the extra weeks to complete the agreements with major countries. Trump has made it very clear that any country that is slow in making a deal will face the full April direct tariff rate once the pause ends.

Progress with Major Partners

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that talks with the European Union are moving ahead, and different deals and announcements could come in a few days. He also said the White House will send letters to about 100 smaller countries, warning them of tariff increases if they fail to negotiate acceptable terms.

He said to expect a flurry of deals soon, noting that the administration is focused on 18 major trading partners responsible for most of the American trade. Still, he said that some nations have been foot-dragging during talks.

India remains a key focus for now. Indian news channels' reports say that a deal could be finalized within 48 hours, setting an average 10% tariff on U.S. imports from India. Meanwhile, Thailand is offered greater market access for US energy and aircraft products to avoid a 36% tariff. Framework pacts with Britain and Vietnam are already being held as models for other countries to follow.

Chapter two

Flexibility for Serious Negotiations

Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, said deadlines could shift for nations showing genuine progress. “There are deadlines, but if talks are moving, the President may extend them," he remarked, suggesting some space for flexibility.

With the August deadline coming up, Trump's strategy combines pressure with incentives. By delaying the tariff hikes, the administration hopes to encourage countries to move faster with more favorable trade deals with the US without risking sudden rate spikes.
