Trump to Host Trade Meeting with China in London
President Donald Trump has revealed that senior US officials will sit down with Chinese officials in London early next week to talk about trade tensions between the two nations.
Phone Call Sets Stage for Talks
The statement follows Trump having a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Trump called their talk very positive and mentioned that it took an hour and a half. The Chinese government has confirmed that Trump initiated the phone call.
The two leaders discussed their ongoing differences regarding additional taxes on products and deliveries of special minerals, both nations require for technology.
US Team Heading to London
Three of Trump's highest-ranking officials will speak for America at the Monday meeting. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will be in attendance.
Trump tweeted on Friday afternoon, stating that he expects the meeting to be a success. London was selected as a neutral location for these crucial talks.
China Asks for Changes
China's foreign ministry said President Xi demanded Trump eliminate policies that America has imposed on China. These include several trade restrictions that have contributed to it being more difficult for the two nations to conduct business with each other.
China also stated that Trump said America enjoys having Chinese students study at US schools. This is significant because Trump's administration has discussed restricting some Chinese student visas.
Finding Common Ground
America-China trade negotiations are important because these two nations have the world's biggest economies. When they disagree, it affects everyone in business and worldwide.
Both nations have been engaged in a trade battle for a number of years, with both sides imposing additional fees on products from the other nation. The fees have raised prices for consumers and caused difficulties for companies.
