Tariff Could Begin on August 1

US Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, confirmed in an interview that the tariffs could be in place by the end of July or by August 1. He also said more details will be posted on the president’s social media platform.

The announcement came after the completion of a government investigation into copper exports, which began in February and was originally expected to end in November. The investigation was made to evaluate whether US industry or not. Lutnick said the goal is to bring copper production back home and strengthen America’s industrial base, especially for major sectors like energy, defense, and electric vehicles.

Copper-Based Industries Expressed Their Concern.

Copper is very important for electronics construction and transportation in many everyday items. The U.S. currently imports about half of its copper, mainly from Canada, Mexico, and Chile. Industry players are concerned that the tariff could raise costs for manufacturers. Some experts also pointed out that the US lacks the proper infrastructure to meet its comfort demand in the short term.

Shares of the largest U.S.-based copper producer went up by 5% after this announcement. The company stands to benefit from the move but previously urged a focus on supporting domestic production rather than disrupted global trade.
