The White House has published the names of those who will make up the “Board of Peace” to Gaza. This potent force will rebuild and govern Gaza, as it attempts to stabilise itself after decades of conflict. The board will be led by President Donald Trump as the chairman.
The board’s primary role would be to oversee a smaller cadre of Palestinian professionals, known as “technocrats,” who would carry out the everyday business of administering the city and its services. Every member of the Board of Peace will be assigned a discrete “portfolio” or area of responsibility (one for fixing the power grid, one for managing money for reconstruction), building up a new government.
Diplomats and Business Leaders
Its board of directors has some of the most powerful figures in the Trump administration. Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, will play a big role in how to continue to manage relations with other countries and leader in the region. Jared Kushner, the President’s son-in-law and Steve Witkoff, a real estate mogul who is one of Trump’s good friends are among them as well. Both men have spent months working as mediators to try to end the fighting.
Injecting an international perspective into the mix is Sir Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of the UK. He is the sole member of the executive board not to hold U.S. citizenship. Blair, a Middle East envoy for many years, is considered to be a controversial figure with his previous support of the Iraq War.
Banking and National Security Experts
The board also includes finance and safety experts. Ajay Banga, the World Bank President, is now part of the team that will help oversee the billions of dollars in funds required to rebuild schools, hospitals and homes in Gaza. Marc Rowan, a billionaire who operates a major investment firm, is expected to concentrate on drawing private money into the project.
And Robert Gabriel will be the last of the founding members, a long-time national security adviser to Trump. To ensure the board’s orders are implemented on the ground, a former Bulgarian diplomat named Nickolay Mladenov has been appointed “High Representative for Gaza.” He will function above all as the intermediary between the board in Washington and the workers on the ground, in Gaza.
Who is Running Gaza Day-to-Day?
The Board of Peace will handle the big issues, but the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a 15-member Palestinian group, is there to do everything else. It is chaired by Ali Shaath, a senior engineer who was born in the Gaza Strip. Shaath is an urban planner and former deputy minister for the PA.
President Trump as a bridge to protect the peace, as this fledgling government gets going, President Trump has further created an International Stabilisation Force and put Major General Jasper Jeffers in command. This military force will work to ensure Gaza stays demilitarised and that aid can be delivered safely to those most in need.
