President Donald Trump has officially signed legislation doubling import tariffs on steel and aluminium from 20% to 50%. This marks the second major increase in tariffs since March. The new duties take effect from Wednesday, sending huge shockwaves through steel and aluminium manufacturing sectors that depend heavily on imported metal.

01
Chapter one

Industries Brace for Economic Impact

The tariff hike affects key materials that are used in everything from automobiles to food packaging production. Rick Huether, the CEO of Independent Can Co. in Maryland, described this situation as chaotic. His firm imports European steel for decorative containers and has already made investment plans.

“Always the question with Mr. Trump is, is this a tactic or is this a long-term plan?”, Heuther tells the reporters. He was seen expressing concerns that customers might switch to plastic options in the market or paper alternatives if the costs keep rising this way.

The United States ranks as the world’s second-largest steel importer after the European Union, mainly sourcing materials from Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea.

Chapter two

UK Secures Temporary Relief

Britain received unexpected protection from the latest increase, with its steel and aluminium tariffs remaining at only 25%. Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds met with the US Trade Representative Jamieson Geer in Paris on Wednesday, calling the exemption as a positive step in ongoing negotiations.

However, UK Steel’s director general, Gareth Stace, warned that even current 25% tariffs have already triggered order cancellations. He described 50% of duties as “catastrophic” for British steel exports to America, which represent about 7% of total exports.

03
Chapter three

Economic Consequences Rise

Trump defended the policy at a recent rally, saying that 50% tariff duties would force American businesses to buy more domestically. He said, “At 25%, they can get over that fence. At 50%, they can no longer get over the fence”.

Yet multiple economists warn of broader economic damage. Previous analysis from 2020 showed that Trump’s first-term steel tariffs created approximately 1,000 jobs in steel plants while removing 75,000 positions across the manufacturing and construction sectors.

Even hours before Trump hiked the tariff duties, multiple companies were directly affected, but they were hoping till the last moment that it would turn out to be temporary or some kind of ploy.
