US safety officials have contacted Tesla following the release of videos showing its new robot taxi driving unsafely on public roads in Austin, Texas. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) confirmed it is now speaking with Tesla to understand what went wrong. The robotaxis were launched quietly on Sunday. A key part of Elon Musk's vision for the company's future, but early public testing has raised some serious safety concerns.

Social Media Clips Show Dangerous Driving

Footage posted on Social Media appears to show the robotaxis making multiple mistakes. In one video, a Tesla robotaxi suddenly stops driving next to a parked police car. Another clip seems to show a car swerving into the wrong lane and even speeding over the speed limit.

Although the cars had a safety driver in the passenger seat, many people on social media question how ready the vehicles are for public use. The NHTSA said that it is reviewing the videos and is in contact with the manufacturer to gather additional information about what happened. Tesla has not publicly commented on this situation yet.

Small Launch Raises Multiple Questions

Despite the hype around robotaxis, Tesla’s launch was limited to just 12 vehicles, and only a small group of invited guests were allowed to take rides. Elon Musk praised the launch, calling with the result of a decade and hard work. But the recent incident and technical errors shown online as the cars are not yet ready for public use.

The cars also come with a lot of restrictions, like they cannot operate in any bad weather or carry passengers under the age of 18. These limitations are the doubts about whether Tesla technology is safe.

Tesla Faces Tough Competition in Robotaxi Race

Other companies are already far ahead in the self-driving taxi race. Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet and Amazon’s Zoox, already has driverless Taxi services in multiple cities around the US. These companies use a mixture of radar, cameras, and sensors to navigate roads.

Tesla, however, is mostly dependent on in-car cameras. Musk believes this will make the system cheaper and more efficient for people. But the trade-off may be safety, which is very important. As global companies come with more driverless cars in places like China and the UAE, the world is watching Tesla closely. For now, the robotaxis remain under regulatory review.
