Scottie Scheffler Wins First British Open Title with Solid Final Round
Scottie Scheffler added a second major to his increasing tally on Sunday, taking the British Open at Royal Portrush by four strokes. The 29-year-old American recorded a closing-round 68, completing 17-under for the week and claiming his first Open crown in comfortable style.
While he experienced a wobble with a double bogey on the 8th hole, Scheffler quickly got it back with a birdie on the following hole. From there, he was steady, handling the windy conditions and making no other mistakes down the stretch.
With this victory, Scheffler is just the fourth player in Open history to score rounds of 68 or better all four days of the championship.
Fourth Big Title Brings Scheffler a Step Away from Grand Slam
It is another major win to add to an already impressive resume. Scheffler has four major titles now: two Masters (2022, 2024), one PGA Championship (2024), and now the British Open. The only major that is left for him to claim is the U.S. Open.
Since 2022, Scheffler has been overpowering the golf world, winning 20 international titles and remaining ranked number one in the world rankings throughout. His victory also constituted his 11th career win while being in the lead after three rounds, a testament to his pressure-closing skills.
Family in attendance as Scheffler captures another Career Benchmark
As he rolled in the winning putt on the 18th green, Scheffler fist pumped softly and flipped his hat before hugging his wife, Meredit,h and his boy. It was the perfect ending to a consistent and tearful week. "Walking up the 18th with a lead in a major, it's the kind of moment you dream about as a kid," he said to reporters.
While Scheffler is modest about his accomplishment, his game portends much more to come. His next significant challenge will be the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, where he'll try to finish off the Holy Grail career Grand Slam.
