Paramount Global has agreed to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit filed by U.S. President Donald Trump over a CBS interview with former vice president Kamala Harris. The settlement ends with the legal battle in which Trump accuses the media company of deceptive editing during its 60 Minutes news segment, which was a move meant to favour his 2024 presidential rival.
The funds will be directed, not to Trump personally, but towards his future presidential Library as per Paramount’s settlement. The company also made it clear that the settlement comes without an apology or admission of any wrongdoing.
Trump’s legal team called the resolution a “win for the American people,” insisting that the case revealed the network’s manipulation and bias. CBS, which is owned by Paramount, had earlier denied any allegations and labelled the lawsuit as baseless.
Allegations of Editing, Big Claims, and Bigger Settlements
The lawsuit stemmed from two different versions of Harris’s interview about U.S relations with Israel. One version was shown on CBS’s Face the Nation, and another on 60 Minutes. Trump claimed that Harris’s response had been edited unfairly, showing her in a more favourable light and protecting her from any political criticism.
Originally, Trump had sought $10 billion in damages, later increasing it to $20 billion. Paramount initially offered $15 million, but Trump’s team demanded more. The final settlement was arranged at $16 million, which includes coverage of Trump’s all legal expenses.
As part of the agreement, 60 Minutes will now release full interview transcripts for future presidential candidates. This decision was made to ensure more transparency in political reporting.
The Deal Comes During Paramount's Planned Merger
The settlement comes as Paramount moves ahead with its merger with Skydance Media, currently under review by the Federal Communications Commission ( FCC ). As per Trump’s political influence, analysts saw the lawsuit as a potential block for regulatory approval.
Sources told US media outlets that internal tensions within CBS News also played a role in the timing of the deal. Several top executives, including CEO Wendy McMahon, reportedly left the network over their refusal to publicly apologise to Trump. There were also some concerns inside Paramount over whether the payment could be interpreted as a bribe for the sitting president, though the agreement clearly states the funds are for Trump’s Library, not for him personally. This settlement follows a similar case where ABC News, owned by Walt Disney, also agreed to settle a defamation suit by Trump.
