Nintendo Swtich 2 Sold 1.6M Units Breaking Record in US
Nintendo's new console is a history maker in its first month
Nintendo made history this month with its comeback in the U.S. console industry. Its new release, the Nintendo Switch 2, sold a whopping 1.6 million units in June alone, marking it as the quickest-selling gaming console at launch in U.S. history.
The previous record was held by Sony’s PlayStation 4, which sold 1.1 million units during its debut month back in November 2013. According to data from market research firm Circana, Nintendo’s strong launch not only broke that record but also helped push total video game hardware sales to their highest-ever level for the month of June.
Switch 2 launch drives highest June hardware sales on record
The Switch 2 launched on June 5 and quickly experienced high demand from players nationwide. That demand turned into large numbers. Total U.S. hardware spending hit $978 million in June—249% higher than at the same period last year. It also shattered the all-time previous June record of $608 million, established in 2008.
Mat Piscatella, executive director at Circana, confirmed the feat: "Nintendo Switch 2 launched as the fastest-selling video game hardware device in U.S. history." He further added that consumer spending on hardware as well as accessories also reached all-time highs for June.
Although Sony's PlayStation 5 is still leading overall 2025 sales to date, the Switch 2 was far and away the leading performer last month in unit volume as well as revenue.
Mario Kart World is an early Switch 2 favorite
Of the launch games, Mario Kart World was the runaway success. It was the third top-selling game on all platforms for June, even with Nintendo's exclusion of digital sales from the figures. Analysts estimate an 82% attach rate, so about 1.3 million copies were sold to Switch 2 owners in bundles or as standalone purchases. Other top performers were Cyberpunk 2077, Street Fighter 6, and Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma all contributing to drive content spending up by 6% to $4.4 billion for the month.
Nintendo sets ambitious target as momentum grows
Worldwide, Nintendo sold 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles in the first four days of its release, the quickest in company history. The console's price point of $449.99, more than the initial Switch when it released, hasn't hampered its popularity.
Nintendo now projects selling 15 million units in its first fiscal year. On the basis of early performance, analysts think the company may even surpass that target. Nevertheless, some warn that robust launches do not necessarily translate into long-term success.
In the meantime, however, Nintendo has every reason to party. The Switch 2's blowout debut solidifies the company's position at the pinnacle of the gaming industry once more.
