Once heralded as a visionary and a man that would reshape the future of transportation, controversial Nikola Founder Trevor Milton received good news this weekend. His conviction of fraud and his four year prison sentence wiped clean as it was announced he would receive a pardon from President Trump. Whether his 1.8 million USD donation to Trump’s election campaign played a part in this seems obvious. Milton was not currently in prison as he was a free man awaiting his appeal trial.
The Rise and Fall
Milton founded Nikola Corporation all the way back in 2014. The company set out to create zero emission hydrogen–powered electric trucks. A noble goal that really could have changed the trucking industry for the better. Nikola, named for the famed inventor Nikola Tesla, went from strength to strength behind a wave of public and financial support. Culminating in a public listing in 2020 and 26 billion USD valuation surpassing the likes of Ford.
Milton did not get to bask in his success for long. Shortly after, the company faced a barrage of controversies. For example, critics most famously accused Nikola of presenting a video of a truck driving through a desert. However, they later alleged that the truck was just an empty shell rolling down a hill. Additionally, they accused Nikola of stamping its logo on a Ford truck and passing it off as its own vehicle.
Milton stepped down in 2020 as the company's stock plummeted and the fraud charges loomed. In In 2022, authorities convicted Milton of fraud and sentenced him to four years in prison.February this year, the now tarnished Nikola Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
In a statement on his social media the Nikola Founder stated : “I am incredibly grateful to President Trump for his courage in standing up for what is right and for granting me this sacred pardon of innocence,”
