Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has pledged to invest $20 billion in the construction of a new data centre in Southaven, Mississippi. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said in a press release on Thursday that it is the state’s biggest economic project on record. The development is happening as the industry faces increasing demand for huge levels of computing power.
The new work, in a facility called “MACROHARDRR,” is part of an ongoing effort to expand xAI’s reach. The addition of this site should help the company reach 2 gigawatts in total power capacity. At that scale, it’s designed to help the startup train more advanced models as it competes against other much larger players like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Location and Strategic Growth
The data centre is under construction and is located in DeSoto County city of Southaven. This location was chosen for its close proximity to xAI’s other supercomputer, Colossus, situated just across the border in Memphis Tennessee. The company has already bought an existing building on the site and is in the process of refurbishing it for high-end tech use.
With the new centre near its other buildings and a power plant it recently acquired, xAI is making one central location for operations. The structure means the company can get up and running fast, with operations projected to begin as soon as February 2026. This short timeline is consistent with Musk’s repeated statements about wanting to rapidly scale up the company’s hardware production at “warp speed.”
Economic Impact and Competition
This project is anticipated to generate several hundred jobs for the local community that will be in place throughout the facility’s operational life and thousands of construction positions during assembly. The state has provided a number of tax breaks and incentives to encourage the relocation. Local officials say the project will generate new tax dollars to support public services such as schools, police and local parks.
That $20 billion price tag underscores how expensive it has become to stay in the race for artificial intelligence. And spending billions on expensive hardware in just the first nine months of last year xAI appears, ironically enough, to be endangered. The new Mississippi site is a key plank in the company’s goal of constructing one of the world’s most powerful computer systems.
