Trapped in the Basement During the Middle of the Night
Nicole Mitchell, a state senator from Minnesota, has been convicted of first-degree burglary. The accusation stems from a strange encounter in which she was found in her stepmother's residence at approximately 4:45 am. She was said to be in black and lurking in the basement when the police came.
Mitchell told police she went there only to take property belonging to her deceased father. These items included a shirt and photographs. Her stepmother, whom she alleges has memory problems, wasn't home when the break-in occurred. Nevertheless, the jury refused to believe her explanation.
Jury Clocked the Words She Spoke Initially
A large portion of the trial was about what Mitchell had said immediately after she was apprehended. In a bodycam video presented in court, she told officers that she entered to take some of her father's belongings.
Later, she had a change of heart and reported to have only gone to check on her stepmother. She confessed to having lied initially when asked for the reason for being at the house. She explained that she lied out of fear. Her defense attorney claimed Mitchell did not have ill motives and stole nothing. But the jury was not convinced and did not take long to deliver their verdict.
What This Means for Her Political Career
The larger question at this point is what comes next. Mitchell is a Democrat, and her party holds a one-seat advantage in the Minnesota Senate. If she resigns, it could trigger a special election and potentially tip the balance of power.
Party officials have indicated that Mitchell had vowed to resign if convicted. As yet, there's no public statement from her. In the meantime, many are demanding her immediate resignation. Although the offense has a lengthy maximum sentence, legal analysts think she will receive less than a year behind bars. But the political fallout may be much more enduring.
