Breaking News – The historic Grand Canyon lodge at the North Rim has been destroyed in a fast-moving wildfire that forced the closure of the entire area and the evacuation of all staff and visitors. The Fire, which is known as the Dragon Bravo Fire, began on July 4 and grew quickly on Saturday night due to strong winds, temperature, and dry conditions.
According to the National Park Service, the fire has now burned over 5000 acres, destroying between 50 to 80 structures. These structures include the Grand Canyon lodge, visitor Centre park, staff housing, and wastewater treatment plant, which caused a chlorine gas leak that made it unsafe for both firefighters and their eyes to control the fire.
Grand Canyon Lodge Burned to the Ground
The Grand Canyon lodge was the only lodging facility at the North Rim, and a very popular spot for tourists from around the world. This place was known for its stone facades and scenic views, and it was also considered a key piece of the park’s history.
Because of the Chlorine Leak, aerial flame retardant drops were limited, making firefighting efforts more difficult. “Chlorine gas is heavier than air and can settle in low areas like an inner canyon.” Said park officials. All Colorado River trips through the Canyon have been rerouted, and popular areas like Phantom Ranch have been closed.
Fire Spread Across Arizona and Canada
The white sage fire burning in nearby Kaibab National Forest has now destroyed over 40,000 acres and forced hundreds to evacuate. Both Arizona fires were likely started by lightning, officials said.
Meanwhile, wildfires in Canada are affecting air quality across America, with cities like Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin reporting healthy and unhealthy air quality levels due to smoke shifting south.
Health and Safety Concerns Rise
The National Weather Service ( NWS ) has issued warnings of dangerous heat, thick smoke, and high fire dangers across Arizona. Temperatures have also topped 110 degrees Fahrenheit in some parts of the Grand Canyon. Authorities are urging people to stay in their rooms and limit out activity as much as possible.
