Chapter one

Space and Defence Cooperation Back Up the Deal

Hungarian officials revealed on Wednesday that ongoing discussions with Washington focus on specific projects covering energy, space, exploration, and military as well. Foreign ministry state secretary Levente Magyar talked about the ambitious scope of this deal during talks at the Hungarian embassy in London. He emphasized the potential for bilateral cooperation.

“We are talking about a few specific projects that could be enveloped into such an agreement,” Magyar said. “There’s a lot of room for working together.” While he stopped short of providing proper timelines of the deal, Magyar expressed optimism about substantial benefits for Hungarian citizens, acknowledging the current US administration has considered priorities to manage.

The initiative stems from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s April announcement that his country is expected to finalize a business deal with Americans within six months. He is known as a Trump ally, directly connecting these negotiations to tariff changes, stating that while tariffs will be negative for Hungary, they negotiate more about other economic deals to offset the tariffs.

Chapter two

Economic Strategy Amid EU Constraints

Hungary faces a delicate balancing act as an EU member state seeking bilateral arrangements with the US. Magyar acknowledges that Hungary cannot pursue different trade agreements because of European Union restrictions, but he emphasized that business partnerships remain viable and valuable.

The timing of this deal proves important for Hungary’s economy, which depends a lot on the automotive sector but confronts potential difficulties from US tariff policies. Hungary is managing a lower-than-expected economic recovery and is working to control inflation ahead of its 2026 elections.

Recent developments offer some space to them. Trump recently took a step back from threats to impose 50% tariffs on EU imports, extending a July 9 deadline to allow the negotiations to come through between Washington and the 27-nation European bloc. This time allows Hungary some extra time to solidify its bilateral arrangements. The proposed Hungarian-American deal represents a very pragmatic approach to solving complex international trade relations.
