These job cuts are tied to Google’s ongoing reorganization, which began in 2022. Last year, Google integrated its Android and Chrome teams under the leadership of Rick Osterloh, creating the Platforms and Devices group. This newly unified unit employs over 20,000 staff members.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the job reductions, referring to the company’s efforts to enhance organizational efficiency. "Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively. This included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January," the spokesperson told The Information.
Despite these job cuts, the company emphasised its continued hiring efforts across the US and globally.
