Google Fined $314 Million in California Over Android Data Use
A California jury has ordered Google to pay more than $314 million for damages to Android phone users in the state. The jury found that Google collected and used cell phone data without their permission, even when they were not being used. The case was brought as a class action lawsuit representing nearly 14 million Californians.
The lawsuit claims that Google sent and received information from Android devices without the users’ consent, causing users to unknowingly spend their mobile data. The plaintiffs argued that Google used the data for its benefit, including targeted advertising, while customers had to pay the cost.
Google to Appeal the Ruling
Google’s spokesperson, Jose Castaneda, set out the company's plans to appeal the verdict. “We believe the decision misunderstands how Android works,” he said in a statement. “These background services are essential for the security and performance of our devices.”
Google also argued in court that there was no harm done to the users. The company pointed out that users agreed to its terms and privacy policies, which allow it to use some background data. However, the jury supported the plaintiffs, saying that the data transfer went beyond what it agreed to.
Another Lawsuit Looms Nationwide
This case applies only to Android users, but another similar case is already moving through the courts. A separate class action lawsuit has been filed in federal court on behalf of Android users and the other 49 U.S states. And the trial is set for April 2026. If the federal case ends with similar results, then Google could face even larger penalties.
The verdict comes at a time when the companies are under a lot of pressure over how they collect and use consumer data. Privacy advocates welcomed the ruling as a win for digital rights and transparency.
