Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, said that he is forming a new political party called the "America Party". This decision came just two weeks after a very public and messy fallout with former US president Donald Trump.
Musk made the announcement on his social media platform, referring to a poll he posted earlier asking the users if the US needed a new political party. “By a factor of 2 or 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk wrote. He also criticized the current political system, calling it a one-party system, not democracy, and claimed that the America party would bring back freedom to Americans.
No Official Registration Yet
As of now, Musk’s party does not appear to be registered with the Federal Election Commission, and he has not said who will lead it. Because Musk was born in South Africa, he cannot run for President under US law. His announcement has caused a lot of speculation about the party's goals and whether it will field candidates in upcoming elections.
Musk’s relationship with Trump has gone from close to hostile. Last year, he supported Trump publicly and financially by donating $250 million to his campaigns and appearing with him in political rallies. He even brought his young son to meet Trump in the White House.
After Trump won the re-election, Musk was appointed to lead a department aimed at cutting down Federal spending, known as the Department of Government Efficiency. But Musk left the administration and began openly criticizing economic policies, especially his massive tax and spending bill, which Musk said ignored clean energy.
Green Energy is the Main Cause of Dispute
Trump, “big beautiful bill” includes huge tax cuts and spending increases, but leaves out green energy subsidies, something Musk’s businesses, especially Tesla, depend on. Trump has accused Musk of being very dependent on government support and that he would investigate federal subsidies given to Musk’s companies.
Masks, a party has entered a political landscape where third-party efforts often struggle to gain attention. But with his influence and platform, the American party could cause fresh political debate, especially among independent voters who are dissatisfied with the previous party.
