The Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) has issued a stark warning for global consumers and businesses alike—prices on goods and everyday staples could soar by as much as 20% in the year 2025. Geopolitical instability, supply chain disruptions, and potential tariffs under a Trump-led administration are chief among the factors driving up costs.
With household staples such as food, drink, electronics, and machinery likely to bear the brunt, this could have far-reaching implications for economies and consumers across the globe.
Rising Costs of Everyday Goods
The CIPS, an international trade association representing 64,000 organizations across 150 countries, has pointed to multiple contributing factors exacerbating price rises. From ongoing tensions in the Middle East to industrial action at key US ports and cybersecurity challenges, disruptions to global sourcing and transportation have never been more profound.
Key items flagged for price increases include:
- Food and Drink—Suppliers warn that sourcing and shipping challenges could push up prices by as much as 20%, with costs being passed to consumers.
- Electronics and Machinery—Global supply chain stresses could drive costs up between 5% and 20% for businesses worldwide.
- Petroleum Products and Chemicals – Crude oil price fluctuations, paired with geopolitical instability, are creating uncertainties in prices for key industries.
Geopolitical Tensions are Disrupting Global Supply Chains
Global freight companies are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain business as usual. The geopolitical environment is forcing significant re-routing of supply chains, leading to higher costs and delays.
One such example is the immediate risks facing vessels transiting the Red Sea. Attacks carried out by Houthi rebels on shipping vessels have driven major shipping firms to re-route their journeys around the Cape of Good Hope. However, the longer routes add significant time and costs to each shipment, impacting both businesses and end users.
Compounding the issue, port workers on the US East Coast have resumed industrial action to renegotiate contracts. The 2024 strike severely impacted the shipping industry, causing prolonged delays in unloading cargo. The latest wave of union action is further disrupting the global supply chain flow, with many fearing an inevitable knock-on effect in the price and availability of goods.
Tariffs and Trade Challenges Under Upcoming US Leadership
Donald Trump’s potential re-entry to the US presidency in 2025 has sent shockwaves across international markets. His administration’s stated policy goals include the imposition of fresh tariffs on goods entering the US.
These include:
- 10% Tariffs on All Global Imports – This broad-sweeping measure could affect virtually all trading partners.
- Targeted 60% Tariffs on Chinese Goods – Aggravating already fragile US-China relations, this policy could spark retaliatory export constraints from Beijing.
Trade experts warn that while companies may attempt to pre-empt policy changes by stockpiling goods, such measures would provide only a temporary buffer. The tariffs’ likely introduction could lead to higher costs across supply chains, deeper disruptions to trade flows, and retaliatory restrictions on US exports.
The Impact on Consumers
Should these price increases materialise, the effects could be disproportionately felt by everyday consumers. Essential household goods, particularly food and drink, would see the most immediate increases. Ben Farrell, CEO of CIPS, has expressed concerns about the knock-on effects of these trends.
“What is clear from our research is that there are a number of strategic challenges that are likely to disrupt the smooth flow of goods and services,” Farrell noted.
Many consumers already grappling with inflation and rising living costs will feel the pinch. Market uncertainty, coupled with businesses passing additional costs onto their customers, could exacerbate financial burdens.
Businesses Face Their Own Challenges
While price increases directly affect consumers, businesses are not spared from challenges. The rising costs of commodities such as machinery, chemicals, computer components, and metals, all estimated to increase between 5% and 20%, could have wide-reaching consequences.
For businesses reliant on imports for raw materials or manufacturing, operational costs would significantly increase. Margins may shrink while consumer confidence wavers due to higher retail prices. Automation and lean operational strategies might become imperative for firms aiming to balance costs and competitiveness.
Navigating an Uncertain Landscape
The challenges presented by these rising costs highlight the need for innovative solutions and deft handling by governments and businesses. Experts warn that without proactive measures, trade flows and economic stability might degrade further.
“The impact of US tariffs on trade flows, giving rise to increased political tension, the global war for talent—these and other issues will need deft handling if growth as well as consumer confidence across the major markets is to be maintained,” added Farrell.
While businesses look for solutions such as diversifying supply chains or strengthening domestic production, the trajectory remains uncertain. Until key tensions ease, costs are expected to climb.
