Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has vowed to hit back if the U.S. follows through with the proposed 50% and Brazilian goods. The announcement came just hours after U.S. President Trump threatened to increase tariffs from the current 10% to 50% starting August 1 for Brazil.
Lula issued a firm response on his Social Media, saying Brazil is a country with independent institutions, and stated that any unilateral tariff increase by the United States would be met with reciprocal tariffs on US products.
The U.S. is Brazil’s second-largest trading partner after China, and a sudden tariff hike could significantly impact Brazil's export economy. Brazilian exports to the U.S. include coffee, iron, gas, and petroleum.
Political Rift Over Bolsonaro Fuels Trade Tensions
Trump’s tariff warning wasn’t only about trade. In a letter to Lula, he expressed outrage over Brazil’s legal treatment of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial for allegedly attempting a coup following his 2022 election loss. Trump called Bolsonaro a highly respected leader and referred to the trial as a witch hunt.
He also drew parallels between Bolsonaro’s legal issues and his own issues, claiming that they both are victims of political persecution. His support for Bolsonaro, a long-time ally, is no surprise, but his move to a link trade policy with foreign legal proceedings is unusual and controversial.
Tariff threats spark diplomatic tensions and political calculations
The tariff move has created not just economic concerns, but a lot of diplomatic tension as well. Brazilian experts say Trump’s politicised approach could backfire and end up boosting Lula’s popularity domestically.
“Leaders who push back against Trump to gain support at home,” said a political analyst. Lula defended the Brazilian court ruling on Content moderation, which is another point raised by Trump in his letter, by stating that the rulings protect against online harm.
Analysts say that if both countries follow tariff threats, then it could damage trade relations. Brazil has already stated that it will assess which US imports will face new tariffs if Trump’s order becomes official.
