Apple Redesigns iPad Pro front cameras following user criticism
Apple is finally making a big design shift to its iPad Pro, and it’s something that most users have been demanding. In the new iPad Pro version, Apple is including not one, but two front cameras. One will be placed on the short edge (for portrait mode) and the second on the longer edge (for landscape mode). This means whether you’re holding the iPad upright or sideways, the front camera will always be in the right place.
This adjustment follows months of criticism of the last model, which featured just one front camera at a landscape-mode angle. This placement was problematic for use with apps in portrait mode or attempting to unlock the device using Face ID. Several users explained it was clumsy for video calls, since the camera angle wasn’t quite right when they held the iPad upright.
The M5 iPad Pro will come later this year with improved performance
This new iPad Pro, or M5 iPad Pro as it is speculated to be named, is set to release by the end of 2025. It will feature Apple’s M5 generation chip, with increased speed and better energy efficiency. The new chip is being developed by TSMC, Apple’s long-standing chip manufacturer. The new chip operates on sophisticated 3-nanometer technology, making it capable of performing better and consuming less power.
In addition to the enhanced processor, the iPad Pro will retain the OLED screen debuting in the 2024 M4 version. The latter was hailed for its slender profile and vibrant colors. Apple should maintain the same general form, but with subtle changes to accommodate the two cameras without compromising the sleek appearance.
The new iPad Pro will also probably be able to take advantage of new AI capabilities and the current iPadOS. These features are part of Apple’s broader efforts to promote iPads as more than tablets—integrating them as devices for work, creativity, and video communication.
Apple had previously dabbled in similar two-sided concepts
Though this camera software update seems fresh, Apple has tried dual-sided features before. In 2010, when Apple first started working on the original iPad, there was discussion about installing dock connectors along both the short and long edges of the tablet. The thought was to enable individuals to charge and use the device in any position they wished. Although it was removed from the final version of the product, it demonstrates Apple’s willingness to accommodate.
Now, with two front cameras, that same idea is returning in a different form. Users won’t need to worry about how they hold their iPad during calls or while unlocking the screen. Whether you’re working on a document, attending a virtual meeting, or just chatting with family, the camera will be right where it needs to be.
