Apple will have to defend itself in a major antitrust case by the US government. After a federal judge refused to dismiss the lawsuit that claims Apple might be illegally dominating the US smartphone market. This decision made by the judge allows the Department of Justice ( DOJ ) to go ahead with its claims that Apple uses unfair strategies to keep iPhone users locked into its ecosystem and remove the rivals for them. This case can go on for a long time and represents one of the most serious cases faced by Apple in American history.

01
Chapter one

Government Accuses Apple of Blocking Competition

The lawsuit was first filed in March 2024, and it alleges that Apple maintains a monopoly by limiting what third-party apps and devices can do on iPhone. The Complaint is about the restrictions on rival smart watches, measuring apps, and digital wallets as an example of behaviour that hurts customers and developers.

The government argues that Apple makes it very difficult for users to switch to non-Apple devices and imposes on developers who try to compete with its products. Apple has just pushed back against this case very strongly. A company spokesperson also said that Apple believes the DOJ’s claims are wrong in both fact and law and said Apple will continue to fight the lawsuit in court.

02
Chapter two

Part of the Wider Tech crackdown

This case against Apple is another big allegation by US regulators. They have also filed cases against Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet, with similar accusations. These companies are all facing lawsuits over their business practices.

For Apple, this lawsuit could be very impactful. The iPhone alone brought more than $200 billion in sales in 2024, making it the biggest sale in the company‘s history. In February, Apple also launched a new budget iPhone model, which was priced a little higher than the last one, but still had strong demand from customers.

If the government succeeds in this case, then Apple could be forced to change how its apps and accessories work on its devices, mainly iPhones change which would create a lot of issues around the tech industry.
