Sydney adds a second International airport as passenger demand climbs

Western Sydney International Airport will commence carrying passengers from 25 October 2026 as part of plans to deliver a second airport in the city and increase capacity in Sydney, with one of the country’s fastest developing regions.
Construction on the new airport, located in Badgerys Creek approximately 60 km west of Sydney's CBD, is said to have cost around $5.3 billion to build and intends to meet long-term demand while increasing airport capacity in western Sydney where both the population and business are expanding significantly over the last decade.
Singapore Airlines and Qantas have confirmed they will operate from the airport once it becomes operational later in the year.
Aviation Capacity Grows as Travel Demand Increases
The airport opening will take place as Australia's aviation sector experiences increasing levels of travel following years of substantial international demand. International Air Transport Association (IATA) figures demonstrate the peak in global passenger traffic in 2025 where Asia-Pacific airlines performed extremely well as a driver for growth in the industry.
The Western Sydney International Airport's first phase will handle capacity for 10 million passengers a year. As the demand escalates throughout the coming decades the airport can expand the capacity greatly.
Unlike Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, the new airport will operate 24 hours a day and allow airlines flexibility in the types of routes and freight the airlines can implement, due to no overnight flight restrictions as per Kingsford Smith Airport.

The airport opening has been closely observed by many Australian and international businesses including those in logistics, freight, tourism and international trade.
Western Sydney is now a key economic region for Australia and continues to grow as a centre of advanced manufacturing, warehousing and distribution. New air connections are expected to encourage passenger flow and trade links between Australia and both North America and Asia.
