Starbucks Japan stake sale could unlock up to ¥500B valuation
Synopsis
Starbucks is evaluating strategic options for its Japan operations, including a potential stake sale valued between ¥400 billion and ¥500 billion. The review comes as the company reshapes its Asia portfolio following its China restructuring deal and ongoing focus on capital efficiency and international growth strategy.
Starbucks to sell its stake in Japan: Starbucks is in talks over selling its stake in one of its oldest-running businesses in Asia.
According to the reports, discussions with investment banks and potential outside investors to potentially buy a partial stake in Starbucks Japan could lead to an agreement, but no decision has been reached.
The Starbucks Japan stake sale could bring in between 400 billion and 500 billion yen, roughly US$2.5 billion to US$3.1 billion according to a first valuation range cited in several reports.
The U.S.-based coffee chain earns revenue from the Japanese market, which it considers as a major contributor alongside China and the United States with high levels of urban café penetration and stable consumer demand unlike emerging markets where earnings may fluctuate.
The reports noted that the sale of Starbucks Japan stake is still in its initial review stages and looking into structural options that may also include maintaining control of Starbucks Japan while also selling a minority stake in it.
Starbucks has not commented on the report and also has never publicly commented on the strategic reviews that occur regularly within the company and in specific regions. Starbucks took full control of Starbucks Coffee Japan in 2014 following a long-term joint venture arrangement since 1995.
The Starbucks Japan stake sale is coming at the tail end of a large restructuring deal made by the company in China, in which it sold a majority stake of its China business to Boyu Capital for roughly US$4 billion but retained minority interest.
The sale of its China business demonstrated that Starbucks may not hold the same control in its most strategic international operations.
Starbucks Japan stake sale may also come as a result of the prevailing market condition in Asia-Pacific café segment with many players and high competitive levels from domestic players like Doutor Coffee and Tully's Coffee in the country.
Japan is one of the most developed cafés market segment in Asia and thus it is an attractive destination for institutions and private equity group.
Globally Starbucks is operating with over 40,000 stores (company-owned and licensed). International revenue diversification strategy still has Starbucks' Asian operations at its forefront where the U.S. Company includes Starbucks Japan, China and South Korea even as it is looking into changing ownership models and market structures.
