Prada joins the space race with new NASA Artemis Moon Suit
Synopsis
Prada has unveiled a lunar spacesuit developed with Axiom Space for NASA’s Artemis program. The project places the luxury group within the growing commercial space sector as governments and businesses increase investment in lunar exploration, infrastructure, and technology linked to future Moon missions.
Italian luxury brand Prada formally announced the design of a lunar suit developed with Axiom Space for NASA's Artemis program, signaling the group's foray from fashion into one of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the global economy: commercial space.
The spacesuit, unveiled this week by Axiom Space and Prada, is intended for future Artemis missions, including Artemis IV. The spacesuit is based on Axiom's AxEMU system, which was selected by NASA to help support astronaut exploration on the lunar surface.
According to the companies, Prada lent its expertise in materials, manufacturing processes, and garment engineering to meet the needs of lunar exploration.
The announcement coincides with increasing investments in space by governments and private companies. The suit represents a major expansion beyond traditional aerospace and into the expanding space economy for companies in both the United States and Australia.
Australia has solidified its footing in the space industry through satellite technology, space services and space partnerships with the NASA-led Artemis program, and the US remains the largest market globally.
Space Economy Expands With New Players
The development signals the inclusion of expert knowledge beyond traditional aerospace within modern space missions. In an effort to establish human presence on the Moon for longer periods, NASA's Artemis program is driving demand for new hardware, equipment and technology.
The global space economy is projected to reach $1.8T by 2035 from $630B in 2023 according to McKinsey & Company, largely fueled by increased commercial space activities complementing government-led programs.
Prada Diversifies Outside Luxury Sector
The move is being made on the back of strong results for Prada. For the 2025 financial year, the company reported a 9% rise in revenue, to 5.72B ($6.5B) with a net income of 852M.
The US region was Prada's quickest developing market and registered a 18% growth for the 2025 year. Versace was also acquired this year in an endeavor by Prada to build a bigger luxury empire.
The first collaboration between Prada and Axiom Space was announced in 2023 and this Spacesuit is the most evident manifestation of the venture as the world anticipates future NASA missions to the Moon.
