Chapter one

Key Highlights

  • DuckDuckGo installs rose 18.1% after Google expanded AI-generated search features during its 2026 I/O event.
  • iPhone downloads climbed nearly 70% during six consecutive days of increased installation activity.
  • Google retained more than 90% global search engine market share in April 2026, according to Statcounter.
  • Recent academic studies examined publisher traffic impact and unsupported claims inside AI-generated search summaries.

DuckDuckGo's traffic saw a huge bump-up following Google's recent rollout of AI-driven search functionality throughout its main Search offering, which has been a subject of debate on how AI summaries are affecting web traffic, publisher visibility and user search patterns generally.

DuckDuckGo reported an average of 18.1% growth week over week for U.S. downloads of the app between May 20 and 25, per a number of TechCrunch. During the six-day period, iPhone installs grew up to 69.9%, and peak growth was 30.5%.

The increase follows Google's announcement at its 2026 I/O conference of expanding AI search capabilities, conversational search answers and automated AI responses that are woven into Search.

Publishers and Search Platforms: Watch AI Shift

This new surge in DuckDuckGo downloads comes on the heels of media outlets, advertisers and digital publishers evaluating how AI-powered search summaries affect web traffic.

Measuring Google AI Overviews: Activation, Source Quality, Claim Fidelity, and Publisher Impact, published in May 2026, revealed that 11% of the claims tested did not have any cited sources supporting them. The study also explored the potential impact on direct publisher visits using AI summaries.

In yet another paper in May 2026, The Impact of AI Search on the Online Content Ecosystem, broader implications on online publishers and search visibility when it comes to AI-generated responses were examined.

Chapter three

Google is still far ahead in the search engine market

Google still dominates the worldwide search market by far, although its share of the market is declining slightly as more users switch to DuckDuckGo.

Statcounter Global Stats reported global search engine market share of 90.02% for Google as per their data from April 2026. Microsoft Bing was next, with 5.14% of the vote, along with Yahoo, which garnered 1.5%, Yandex got 1.19% and DuckDuckGo received 0.71%.

But the competition for the regions is still uneven. Yandex is still better positioned in the Russian market, and Baidu is continuing to be one of the most important search engines in China.

DuckDuckGo also said it also saw an uptick in adoption of its AI-free search feature, which eliminates AI content in search results as well as AI-generated images. The page had a week-over-week growth of 22.7% and reached a peak week-over-week growth of 27.7% on May 24.

Some users wanted more control of the integration of AI within search products, Chief Executive Gabriel Weinberg said.

DuckDuckGo is a privately held company and it does not publish financial data.
