Synopsis

CleanMax has secured about $575 million in financing for solar and wind energy projects as electricity demand from AI infrastructure and data centres continues rising. The funding supports nearly 1 GW of renewable capacity across Rajasthan and Karnataka and reflects broader growth in corporate renewable energy procurement and grid-scale clean power investment.

CleanMax secured $575 million to expand renewable energy projects as AI-linked electricity demand and industrial clean power procurement continue increasing across major energy markets.

Chapter one

Key Highlights

  • CleanMax raised about $575 million for solar and wind projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka.
  • Funding is linked to rising electricity demand from AI, cloud computing, and data centre operations.
  • India’s installed renewable energy capacity reached 279.2 GW by April 2026, according to MNRE.
  • Global lenders from France, Japan, Singapore, and the United Kingdom participated in the financing package.

Data centres and AI infrastructure are fueling India's energy transition as Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions secured a $575 million financing round for fresh solar and wind projects.

The investment will enable the deployment of nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity in Rajasthan and Karnataka, along with a slew of other major projects in these states that are being backed by investments in clean energy to cater to the growing demand for electricity from industrial facilities and digital infrastructure.

The development follows a growing trend of energy-intensive industries around the world, including cloud computing and AI applications, stepping up their long-term renewable power adoption to ensure secure electricity supplies and control costs.

Global banks participated in the financing package

The CleanMax deal, which involves $300 million raised from lenders that include HSBC, BNP Paribas, DBS Bank, Societe Generale, Credit Agricole and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.

The package includes external commercial borrowings, foreign currency banking facilities, and rupee-denominated loans against renewable infrastructure assets, as per company's announcements and financing details reported by Reuters and industry publications.

The projects will primarily serve the commercial and industrial consumers in the interstate electricity transmission infrastructure in India, CleanMax said.

Chapter three

Renewable expansion tracks global AI energy shift

Funding is welcome as AI and data centre electricity usage becomes a growing concern for energy markets across the board. Power demand from data centres will surge significantly in the coming years as data centres host AI workloads and cloud computing grows, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in its recent Electricity Market Outlook.

India has also been quickening its renewable energy growth. As per data from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the total installed renewable energy capacity in the country stood at approximately 279.2 GW by April 2026, with 154.2 GW from solar and 56.4 GW from wind.

This makes India the world's fourth biggest market for renewable energy after China, the United States and the European Union.

Chapter four

Corporate renewable deals increase

CleanMax had 5.7 GW contracted renewable energy portfolio for FY2025-26. Of the new capacity installed, 74% was from customers who are current or repeat customers, indicating ongoing demand from industrial and technology-related sectors, the company said.

In 2023, Brookfield Renewable bought 100% of CleanMax with a $360 million investment in energy transition projects involving infrastructure.
