Global uncertainty, weaker domestic economy and high costs are still weighing over sentiment. NAB economist Michael Hayes NAB said profitability in Australia was still well below its long-run average, an indication that businesses were still finding it hard to earn strong profits despite improvements in sales activity.
Although business costs eased slightly through May, these remained at elevated levels it said. A separate indicator for capacity utilisation slipped under 82% for the first time since early-2025 comforming that economic activity is beginning to slow down.
The numbers come as the Reserve Bank of Australia battles ongoing inflation, hiking interest rates three times this year and lifting it to 4.35%. Payments have to be studied for any signs of companies passing higher operating and energy costs through to consumers, possibly extending inflation pressures even more.
The latest NAB monthly survey due later on Friday is expected to show business conditions were steady in June 2026. But with businesses doing it tough amid higher costs and weaker confidence as the economic backdrop slowly experiences a painfull softening Recovery cost in Australia.
