Arafura advances with big rare earths project
Arafura Rare Earths Ltd said on Friday it will raise about A$350 million via share placement and retail offer to develop its Nolans rare earths project in Australia’s Northern Territory. The company itself approved the A$1.6 billion project just one day earlier, completing a significant milestone in years of planning and finance discussions. With demand for critical minerals on track to continue surging throughout the decade Arafura said it was anticipating that by the end of this decade, the project will rank as Australia’s third largest rare earths operation.
Gina Rinehart Leads Investment as Global Demand Swells
Mining billionaire Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting has also pledged about A$85 million to the raising, boosting its holding in Arafura from approximately 15.5% to 17.5%. All of these funds raised will then cover in their entirety the equity component needed for the Nolans development, the company said. As Western countries attempt to cut dependence on the country for rare earth production and supply chains, which China dominates today, Arafura has also lined up financing support from export credit agencies in the U.S., Canada, Germany and South Korea.
Nolan's project to promote EV, defence and clean energy industries
The Nolans project will produce neodymium-praseodymium oxide (NdPr) used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, advanced electronics and defence technologies. Arafura stated it has secured approximately 93% of its proposed offtake target through supply agreements and global partnerships. The company will also provide 500 tons of NdPr to Australia’s strategic minerals reserve, which is expected to start later this year. In addition to the institutional raise, a separate A$25 million share purchase plan will be made available to retail investors.
