Nvidia Corp is in discussions to invest around $20 billion in OpenAI as part of the artificial intelligence company’s latest funding round. The investment would represent a significant commitment by the chipmaker and form part of OpenAI’s broader plan to raise to $100 billion in new capital to support its expanding operations.

The talks were first reported by Bloomberg News, which said the proposed investment would likely be Nvidia’s largest single equity commitment if completed. The report noted that negotiations are ongoing and that the final size, structure and timing of the investment could change.

Funding Talks and Potential Scale

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is seeking fresh funding to expand its computing infrastructure and advance research into next-generation artificial intelligence systems. The company remains privately held and has drawn interest from several major technology firms and financial backers as it seeks to secure one of the largest private funding rounds on record.

In addition to Nvidia, other companies, including Amazon.com Inc., and investment groups such as SoftBank Group Corp, have been reported to be in talks about participating in the fundraising, though the size of their potential contributions has not been finalised.

Why the talks matter

The reported discussions highlight the growing financial and operational links between leading AI developers and the companies supplying the hardware that powers their systems. NVIDIA’s graphics processing units are widely used in training and running large language models, including those developed by OpenAI.

The investment would deepen ties and reflect the scale of funding required to support advanced AI development.

Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said in a recent interview that the company plans to take part in OpenAI’s ongoing funding round and would also evaluate an investment if the AI firm moves ahead with a future initial public offering. Huang described the round as potentially the largest private fundraising in history, but did not specify an amount.

Huang has also pushed back against speculation of tensions between the two companies, saying they continue to work closely together. NVIDIA and OpenAI have declined to comment directly on the reported $20 billion figure.

In September 2025, Nvidia and OpenAI announced a non-binding letter of intent outlining plans for large-scale cooperation on AI infrastructure, including potential investment and deployment of Nvidia systems to support OpenAI’s computing needs. That announcement referenced a possible investment of up to $100 billion, though Nvidia later clarified it was not a firm commitment.

Subsequent reporting indicated that both companies were reassessing the structure and scope of that cooperation, leading to the current focus on a defined investment linked to OpenAI’s ongoing funding round.

Negotiations remain ongoing, and any agreement would depend on final terms, regulatory considerations and commitments from other investors.
