A Weapon That Halted the Film World in Its Tracks
Quietly in June 2025, the Chinese tech company known for running TikTok, ByteDance, launched an AI video tool they’ve named Seedance. At the time, it didn’t make much noise. But everything changed with the second version, released eight months later. Within days, the videos made with the tool, which included characters like Spider-Man, Deadpool and Darth Vader, were proliferating across the internet and people were amazed at how realistic they looked.
Unlike other AI video tools, Seedance 2.0 does not just produce moving images. It does so in one shot, depicting images and sound effects and spoken dialogue from a single written command. Seedance aced a video test, and then went one better, providing better version with aaction scene that looked like it came from the latest big-budget Hollywood blockbuster.
Lawyers Are Getting Involved
The viral videos were amazing, but they posed immediate problems. The main Hollywood studios were up in arms that their most valuable characters were being borrowed without permission. Disney and Paramount both sent official legal notices to ByteDance, asking the company not to use their characters or content. Japan, too, has initiated an investigation after AI-generated videos of beloved Japanese cartoon characters started appearing widely online.
This is not the first time an AI company has run into this kind of resistance. OpenAI was sued by The New York Times after the company used news articles to train its technology in 2023. Disney levied similar complaints against Google. The distinction between Seedance and these other studios is that its videos literally looked good enough to feel like a direct threat, not just a legal grey area. “There’s no question ByteDance knew it was likely to get sued but decided to roll the dice, as going viral first would result in massive attention and legitimacy for the tool long before any legal penalties could ever be imposed,” one researcher said.
What It Means for Filmmakers Big and Small
For major Hollywood studios, the issue is bigger than a couple of viral videos. The more profound worry is what happens next. If a tool can already create action sequences that seem they could belong in a cinema, how long until it creates whole movies? The reaction has been practically the inverse at smaller production companies, though. A leader of a Singapore-based animation studio described the tool as an accomplished film director built in, adding that it opens doors that had been closed to companies on shoestring budgets.
In much of Asia, shorter online films and drama series are huge but made for tiny budgets, sometimes less than $140,000 for 80 short episodes. Most of these productions have kept to straightforward stories because anything more ambitious is too expensive. With a tool like Seedance, those same teams could make science fiction, action or period films now without requiring even a fraction of a traditional film budget. In the meantime, China looks like it’s moving there, and moving fast. Last year, DeepSeek, another Chinese AI tool, rocked the tech world when it briefly became the most downloaded free app in the United States by surpassing ChatGPT. Seedance said that it's not a one time moment, China is gaining serious momentum in artificial intelligence and the rest of the world has taken notice.
