Tencent Tesla partnership puts WeChat inside China’s electric cars
Synopsis
Tencent and Tesla have partnered to integrate WeChat features into Tesla vehicles in China, enabling drivers to send locations directly from the messaging app to their car navigation systems. The update will roll out through over-the-air software updates, starting with Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Tencent Cloud is providing the infrastructure supporting the integration. The move reflects growing demand for connected vehicle features and highlights the importance of integrating widely used digital platforms into automotive systems in China’s competitive electric vehicle market.
Tencent and Tesla have also partnered to roll out WeChat-compatibility features in Tesla vehicles in China, allowing consumers to send the location sent via WeChat to their car navigation systems. The update will be released as an over-the-air software update and will start with Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The option will be a standard feature of the future Tesla models sold in China.
It was initially announced by Reuters that Tencent Cloud is the entity that was involved in the provision of the cloud infrastructure used in the integration of the in-car system with WeChat of Tesla.
WeChat locations can sync directly with vehicle navigation
The integration allows drivers to exchange places via WeChat and access them on the Tesla navigation system. This removes the task of entering the destinations on the vehicle through typing.
According to Tencent Cloud, the system will also give recommendations on the destination, and drivers will be able to access the corresponding services and places more easily.
Tesla will introduce the feature through over-the-air updates to the software. Already existing models in China, such as Model 3 and Model Y, will receive the update first.
The WeChat integration will be the Tesla sales of the future in China. Regular installation of software updates will enable Tesla to introduce features to the cars and improve their functionality without the need to send them to a real-life service centre.
Tesla strengthens integration with China’s digital platforms
WeChat is a renowned Chinese chat, payment and location sharing application. It must be installed in Tesla cars to conform to the driving experience with the tools that the customers already possess.
This is particularly the case in the electric car market in China, where the competitive advantage of its products is highly defined by its software abilities and connectedness.
Another challenge that is emerging with car technology is the growing importance of cloud infrastructure, which is also highlighted by the alliance. The navigation can be synchronised, recommendations can be offered, and software can be updated with the use of cloud connectivity.
An example of the role played by Tencent Cloud could be viewed in how the technology vendors are helping the automakers to add connected car capabilities to automobiles.
Tencent Cloud claims that the integration would allow Tesla cars to retrieve location data in WeChat and offer suitable suggestions for services. The company confirmed that the feature will be offered through software updates, and it will be offered in new Tesla cars in China.
Tencent and Tesla expand technology collaboration
In China, Tencent operates a powerful electronic network, WeChat. In one of its factories, Tesla manufactures Model 3 and Model Y in Shanghai and is still one of the main electric car brands in China.
Tencent Cloud is a digital infrastructure that boosts services related to each other in many industries, like automotive systems.
The WeChat integration will first be introduced via the software updates to the existing cars and will be available in the subsequent Tesla models sold in China.
The joint venture has the potential to lead to other related features as the automobile manufacturers continue integrating cars with social media sites.
