OpenAI Cuts Frontier AI Model Prices as Anthropic, China Challenge ChatGPT
Synopsis
GPT-5.6 Sol will cost developers $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, down from $5 and $30, with the cuts applying to eligible API, ChatGPT Work and Codex plans for the next three months.
OpenAI is cutting the price of its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol model for developers by more than 20% for the next three months as competition in the AI market continues to intensify.
The move makes OpenAI's frontier model significantly cheaper to use through its API and could encourage more developers and businesses to build applications around it.
The price reduction applies to eligible API plans, credits for its agentic AI product ChatGPT Work and its coding platform Codex.
OpenAI said prices for its Pro, Plus and Business subscriptions will remain unchanged.
GPT-5.6 Sol Gets a Major Price Cut
Under the new pricing, GPT-5.6 Sol will cost $4 per 1 million input tokens and $20 per 1 million output tokens for standard short-context use. Previously, the same rates were $5 and $30.
That represents a 20% reduction for input tokens and a much larger 33% cut for output tokens.
The pricing change could make GPT-5.6 Sol more attractive for developers running applications at scale where token costs can quickly become a major part of operating expenses.
OpenAI has also been reducing prices across its wider model range. Last month, it cut the price of its mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model by 20% and reduced the cost of its lower-priced Luna model by 80%.
Anthropic and Chinese AI Models Add Pressure
The latest cuts come as OpenAI faces stronger competition from Anthropic and rapidly improving Chinese AI models.
Anthropic currently lists its Claude Fable 5 model at $10 per 1 million input tokens and $50 per 1 million output tokens. Its Claude Opus 5 model costs $5 and $25 respectively.
That leaves GPT-5.6 Sol considerably cheaper than both Anthropic models on the listed API rates.
The pricing battle reflects a broader shift in the AI industry. As models become more capable, companies are increasingly competing not only on performance but also on how much developers must pay to use them.
For OpenAI, lower API prices could help protect its developer base and encourage greater usage as rivals continue to close the gap.
