Synopsis

Nvidia is reportedly nearing a US$14 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, strengthening its position across open-source AI, software and model development.

Nvidia is in advanced talks to acquire artificial intelligence startup Hugging Face in a deal that could be worth about US$14 billion, including a potential US$1 billion retention package for employees.

An agreement valuing Hugging Face at about US$12.9 billion could be reached as soon as this week, although negotiations remain ongoing and the terms or timing could still change.

The potential acquisition would be one of Nvidia’s largest moves beyond its core chip business.

Hugging Face has become a major hub for developers to share, download and deploy open-source AI models, giving Nvidia access to a community that sits much closer to the model-development layer of the AI industry.

Chapter one

Nvidia Pushes Deeper Into Open-Source AI

Founded in 2016, Hugging Face was valued at US$4.5 billion during a 2023 funding round that raised US$235 million. Nvidia participated alongside investors including Salesforce Ventures and Alphabet’s GV.

The proposed price represents a dramatic jump from that valuation. Hugging Face is currently generating around US$150 million in annual revenue, according to The Information, meaning Nvidia would be paying a substantial premium for the platform’s strategic position.

For Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, the attraction extends beyond software. Major AI companies such as OpenAI, Google, Amazon and Anthropic are developing their own chips, potentially reducing their dependence on Nvidia over time. A stronger foothold in open-source AI could help keep more developers and workloads within Nvidia’s wider ecosystem.

Chapter two

A Bigger AI Ecosystem Strategy

Nvidia has increasingly expanded beyond accelerators through software, investments and acquisitions. It recently agreed to a US$6 billion licensing deal with AI startup Poolside and has also pursued other AI infrastructure companies.

The Hugging Face deal would push that strategy further by connecting Nvidia’s hardware business with one of the most important distribution platforms for open AI models.

However, the acquisition could also raise questions about Hugging Face’s neutrality. The platform supports models and tools designed to work across competing hardware ecosystems, including chips from companies such as AMD and Intel.

For Nvidia, the opportunity is clear: owning a major open-source AI platform could give it another powerful link between developers, models and the computing infrastructure needed to run them.
