OpenAI Releases GPT-5.4 With New Pro and Reasoning Modes
Synopsis
OpenAI released GPT-5.4 on Thursday, just two days after its previous model GPT-5.3. The new model comes in two versions, GPT-5.4 Thinking for complex reasoning tasks and GPT-5.4 Pro for the most demanding professional work. It uses fewer tokens than older models, makes fewer factual errors, and can now control a computer on its own. ChatGPT Plus users get access to the Thinking version, while Pro and Enterprise customers get access to both. The older GPT-5.2 Thinking model will be switched off in June 2026.
OpenAI launched GPT-5.4 Thursday, under 4hours after its predecessor. It is available in two varieties, Thinking for reasoning work and Pro for heavy-duty professional applications. The model makes fewer mistakes, performs better on workplace benchmarks, uses fewer tokens and can now operate a computer on its own.
Key Highlights
- OpenAI launched GPT-5.4, just two days after releasing GPT-5. 3, maintaining a blistering release speed
- There are two variants of the model, Thinking for reasoning jobs and Pro, which handles complex professional tasks
- It produces 33% fewer factual errors per claim than GPT-5. 2
- GPT-5. 4 is now able to directly manipulate a computer, clicking, validating and correcting tasks on its own
OpenAI Is Still Moving Fast, GPT-5. 4 Is Already Here
OpenAI has released another new model. This one is called GPT-5.4 and it came out Thursday, two days after GPT-5.3. Things have been moving really fast lately, and this release is bigger than the last one. The company’s most capable model yet for professional use, it says. Depending on what you need, it is available in two versions and represents a leap forward in features over the older models.
Two Models: One for Thought, the Other for Heavy Lifting
GPT-5.4 comes in two versions. The first is GPT-5. 4 Thinking, designed for tasks that require a deliberative step-by-step reasoning, research, strategy, tackling complex problems. The second is GPT-5.4 Pro, which is designed for heavy-volume, task-based work in which both speed and accuracy count.
The Thinking version is accessible to Plus, Team and Pro subscribers. The Pro version is only available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers ($200 a month) and Enterprise customers. Free users see it only sometimes when the system automatically routes them through to it. The older GPT-5.2 Thinking model that doesn’t turn off until June 5, 2026
Making Fewer Mistakes and Improving at Office Work
OpenAI claims that the individual facts that this model generates have a threefold reduction in the number of mistakes compared to GPT-5.2. Overall, full answers are 18% less likely to contain any errors. For someone using this for actual business, that is a significant improvement.
On professional benchmarks, GPT-5.4, up from 71% before, ranked 83% across 44 different jobs. For spreadsheet tasks, it rose from 68 per cent to 87.5 per cent. Human reviewers preferred its presentation slides, 68% of the time. That’s strong growth across the board.
The Model Can Now Operate a Computer Independently
This is new. GPT-5.4 is the first main OpenAI model that can actually control a computer. It can self-click, self-check and fix things without someone looking over its shoulder step by step. OpenAI refers to it as a build-run-verify-fix loop.
This is especially useful for businesses that run multi-step automations. It performs the task, verifies if it did, and corrects if not. It also processes images of up to 10 million pixels, far sharper than what older versions could handle.
Less Token Use but More Cost Per Token
OpenAI also adjusted how the model uses tools. Instead of squeezing all tool instructions into every prompt, the new Tool Search system pulls in only what is needed. That reduces token usage by as much as 47%.
However, the price per token is higher. OpenAI says those efficiency gains should help offset things, but businesses will have to verify that themselves. Via the API, the model has a context window of up to 1 million tokens, sufficient for entire codebases or hundreds of pages of documents in one pass.
FAQs
- What is GPT-5.4 and in what way is it different from GPT-5?
GPT-5.4 is a larger update, it introduces the use of computer code, greater accuracy, two specialised iterations and boosts performance on professional tasks.
- Which ChatGPT plan do I need?
The Thinking version is for Plus and Team users. Only Pro ($200/month) and Enterprise users can access GPT-5. 4 Pro. Free users can visit the site from time to time when they are automatically redirected.
- What does it mean that GPT-5.4 can use a computer?
It can click, run checks and repair things on screen without a human running through each step. Useful for long, multi-step tasks.
- Will GPT-5.2 still work?
Yes, but not until June 5, 2026, when it will be disabled.
- Does GPT-5.4 cost more?
The cost per token is higher, but OpenAI claims the model uses significantly fewer tokens to achieve the same task, so costs should even out.
