Chapter one

Google adds new tools for coursework and research

Study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes are now available in one location, and students can collaborate with classmates and use the content to create study guides and plans through the new Google Gemini student hub.

Moreover, Google is bringing visual elements such as graphs and images to study notebooks, including the latest features such as interactive tables, grids, and three-dimensional models, and Google Lens can scan worksheets or other study materials.

With the Deep Research feature, now available in Gemini Live, when a student initiates a research task in Gemini, they can end the voice session and let Gemini work while they are away from their voice session, and Gemini will notify them when the report is ready.

Chapter two

US and international plans differ

Google AI Pro usually costs $19.99 per month, but eligible US college students will receive 5TB of storage with the student subscription. According to Google, the student plan offers four times more access to Gemini than the standard Gemini subscription and access to Gemini across Google apps, including Gmail and Google Docs.

Google AI Plus is available to students in countries outside the United States. It has a 400GB storage capacity and twice the default Gemini experience quota. This subscription is available in more than 140 countries where Google AI Plus is available, with the exception of Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Tunisia, Bolivia, Albania, and several other countries, according to Google.

The initiative fits into the broader context of the use of artificial intelligence in higher education. The Higher Education Global Survey on AI 2026, which includes information on 45,398 students and 18,114 faculty members in 35 countries, was conducted to assess the level of adoption of AI in different regions and institutions.

The announcement of new capabilities is good news for businesses in Australia and the United States, as Google invests heavily in the development of its AI infrastructure. Alphabet revenue rose 24 percent year over year to $119.8 billion, while Google Cloud revenue rose 82% to $24.8 billion.
