Synopsis

JB Hi-Fi’s shares slumped 13% after the electronics retailer reported weaker July sales that highlights the impact of higher interest rates and cost of living pressures on Australian consumers.

JB Hi-Fi shares plunged 13% after the electronics retailer reported softer than expected annual earnings and warned that cautious consumer spending is weighing on sales.

The company said higher interest rates, elevated fuel prices and supply shortages for some technology products have continued to pressure household budgets, resulting in weaker trading momentum.

For the 12 months ended June 30, JB Hi-Fi posted a net profit of A$489.9 million, up from A$462.4 million a year earlier but the result fell slightly short of analysts' expectations.

Investors were particularly concerned by the retailer's July trading update which showed declining comparable sales across both JB Hi-Fi Australia and The Good Guys. The update raised fresh concerns about consumer demand and the broader retail outlook.

July Sales Decline Signals Softer Retail Demand

JB Hi-Fi reported that comparable sales at its Australian stores fell 1.4% in July while same-store sales at The Good Guys declined 1.7% during the month.

The weak trading update overshadowed the company's modest profit growth and prompted a sharp market reaction. The stock dropped to A$71.16 which is at its lowest level since early June while shares of other retailers also declined as investors reassessed the strength of consumer spending.

Analysts said the combination of high borrowing costs, rising living expenses and slowing housing activity continues to limit discretionary purchases, particularly for big-ticket electronics.

Chapter two

Analysts Expect Earnings Forecast Cuts

Jefferies analyst Michael Simotas said JB Hi-Fi's cautious outlook on both sales and profit margins is likely to trigger further earnings downgrades across the market.

Jarden analyst Ben Gilbert echoed those concerns, noting that weakening sales are occurring despite an ageing installed base of consumer electronics that would normally support replacement demand. He expects analysts to trim earnings forecasts by a mid-single-digit percentage in the coming months.

The results also highlight the broader challenges facing Australia's retail sector as households remain selective with discretionary spending. While inflation has eased from recent highs, elevated interest rates and ongoing cost-of-living pressures continue to influence purchasing decisions.

Investors will now be watching whether consumer confidence improves in the months ahead or whether retailers face a more prolonged period of subdued demand.
