JSW MG Motor India declared that it will invest up to 440 million dollars to further its production capability and manufacture more of the hybrid and electric automobiles as the company continues to enhance its presence in the new energy vehicle space, which is growing fast.
The funds will be spent on an expansion of the manufacturing plant of the company in Halol, a western state of Gujarat. The expansion will increase the annual manufacturing capacity of the plant from approximately 100,000 cars to approximately 300,000 cars in the long run, the company indicated.
The Chinese-Indian joint venture of SAIC Motor and JSW Group intends to utilise the capital to launch additional hybrid and electric vehicles, as well as raise the proportion of local parts. This includes greater localisation of battery packs and other key parts, which can help reduce reliance on imports and improve supply efficiency.
In India, JSW MG Motor India is currently selling electric models, such as the MG ZS EV and Comet EV. The company indicated that the expansion will aid in the future introduction of new products and facilitate the increasing demand for cleaner vehicles.
India is also promoting the use of electric vehicles due to the reduction of emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. The local manufacturers of automobiles in the country have been increasing local production and investing in new energy technologies to keep up with the new consumer demand and government policies.
In 2023, JSW Group partnered with the India operations of MG Motor to form the current joint venture outfit with SAIC Motor. The intended investment is a sign of the expansion strategy of the company in one of the largest automobile markets in the world.
