Synopsis

Uber is cutting about 3,300 jobs as it flattens its management structure and prepares for growing robotaxi competition, while redirecting resources towards autonomous transportation, technology and other areas expected to shape its future growth.

Uber Technologies is cutting about 3,300 jobs, or roughly 10% of its workforce, in its largest round of layoffs since the COVID-19 pandemic as the ride-hailing company prepares for a market increasingly shaped by robotaxis.

Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said the restructuring will flatten management layers and reduce organisational complexity that accumulated during years of rapid expansion.

The changes are intended to speed up decision-making, clarify responsibilities and generate savings that Uber plans to reinvest in growth and technology.

Uber employed about 34,000 people globally at the end of 2025, according to its annual report.

The planned cuts would be company’s most significant workforce reductions since May 2020, when it eliminated about 6,700 positions as the pandemic devastated demand for rides.

Chapter one

Robotaxis Become a Strategic Priority

The restructuring comes as autonomous vehicles increasingly threaten to change Uber’s traditional role as an intermediary connecting passengers with human drivers.

Waymo, the leading US robotaxi operator, already runs autonomous vehicles through Uber’s platform in Austin and Atlanta, while continuing to expand into markets independently. Tesla and other autonomous-driving companies are also accelerating their robotaxi ambitions.

Uber is responding by investing heavily in the sector. The company plans to commit more than $10 billion to robotaxis over the coming years, including investments in companies developing autonomous-driving technology, while positioning its platform as a marketplace for driverless transportation.

Khosrowshahi did not directly blame artificial intelligence for the layoffs. However, the restructuring reflects a broader shift in the skills and organisational structure Uber expects to need as autonomous vehicles become more important to its business.

Chapter two

Pressure Extends to Uber Eats

Uber is also facing increasing competition in food delivery from DoorDash, Instacart and regional platforms. The company has sought greater scale through acquisitions, including its proposed $14.8 billion purchase of Delivery Hero.

The latest workforce overhaul will reduce employees seven or more reporting layers below Khosrowshahi by 20% and nearly halve teams with only one or two direct reports. Uber also plans to restrict fully remote roles to about 1% of its workforce while retaining its three-day office policy.

The cuts come as Uber’s shares have declined about 8% this year, underperforming both the S&P 500 and rival Lyft, amid investor concerns about competition and the rapidly changing transportation landscape.
