Australia Probes Two More Sydney Airport Taxiing Incidents Involving Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar

Australia’s transport safety regulator has opened two investigations into separate taxiing conflicts at Sydney Airport involving aircraft operated by Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said both incidents were classified as safety incidents rather than serious incidents, with no immediate risk of collision after flight and ground crews responded to avoid the conflicts.
The first incident occurred on August 16, when air traffic control instructed a Virgin Australia Boeing 737 taxiing at the airport to give way to a Qantas 737 that was vacating the runway.
According to the ATSB, the instruction was not correctly read back by the Virgin flight crew and the discrepancy went unnoticed by air traffic controllers.
Second Taxiing Conflict Under Investigation
A second incident occurred on August 25, involving a Jetstar Airbus A320 and a Bombardier Dash 8. The ATSB said incomplete traffic information was communicated to the Jetstar crew, resulting in a conflict with the taxiing Bombardier aircraft.
The regulator is conducting the investigations separately but has assigned coordinating teams to the cases. It said the investigations could potentially be expanded or combined depending on the evidence gathered.
The ATSB expects to release preliminary reports on both incidents within six to eight weeks.
Virgin Australia and Qantas, which owns Jetstar, said separately that they would cooperate with and support the ATSB investigations.
Sydney Airport Faces Wider Safety Scrutiny
The investigations add to existing scrutiny of aircraft movements at Sydney Airport. The ATSB is already investigating four similar incidents at the airport, including one event that resulted in an injury to a cabin crew member.
The latest cases will therefore be examined alongside those existing investigations as authorities assess whether there are broader operational or communication issues contributing to taxiing conflicts.
While the ATSB stressed that neither of the latest events posed an immediate collision risk, the repeated incidents highlight the importance of clear communication between pilots and air traffic controllers during ground movements.
The regulator’s forthcoming preliminary reports are expected to provide further detail on the circumstances surrounding both events and identify any immediate safety concerns that may require attention.
