Aureka Advances Plan to Reopen Historic Victorian Gold Mine
Synopsis
The company has completed an initial concept study supporting a low-cost restart of the Comstock project and has lodged a new prospecting licence application over the key Walkers Pit area.
Aureka Ltd have unveiled the first concept study for the Comstock gold project in Victoria, stating it would allow for a lower-cost restart and pinpoint the areas they recommend for the first stage of mining as Walkers Pit.
The study concluded the shallow mineralization at Walkers Pit offered the most appropriate and viable site to initiate mining operations and allowed a staged approach, minimizing the capital required for the development.
As part of the project development, Aureka has submitted a new prospecting licence application covering Walkers Pit, where further drilling is envisaged.
Concept Study Shapes Restart Strategy
The concept study, conducted to evaluate the mining viability of Comstock, based its assumptions on the recent geological data from drill results, site investigations, and geological modeling.
To facilitate geological understanding and mine planning, Aureka had also completed a high-resolution LiDAR mapping of the project area. Aureka also renewed Exploration Licence EL007053 in March this year which comes with an extended total term of 2030 years for the much larger Comstock project, a longer period than initially anticipated.
Gold Sector Supports Renewed Exploration
The gold industry is also lending support for renewed exploration initiatives in the area, Victoria remains at the forefront of Australia’s gold producing industry and is witnessing increased exploration efforts in various of its established goldfields such as Bendigo, St Arnaud and Ballarat.
Australia’s Identified Mineral Resources 2025, a report released by Geoscience Australia, highlights Australia as the second leading gold producer globally, after China, and a global leader in gold resource holdings.
High demand from investors, central banks, and over-the-counter transactions, pushed gold demand to a record high this year as shown in the World Gold Council’s Gold Demand Trends Full Year 2025.
The main gold producing countries include China, Canada, Russia, and the United States in addition to Australia.
Financial Position and Next Steps
The March 2026 Quarterly Activities and Cash Flow Report fromAurekaposted that the company’s cash and cash equivalent funds were at $3.7m and that the group was actively exploring its various Victorian gold holdings.
The company’s decision to utilize the near surface mineralisation at Walkers Pit for its initial development was based on the site’s readiness for staged mining operations said Walkers Pit MD James Gurry.
The plan is to also undertake additional drilling, feasibility work and relevant administrative procedures for the project as part of the overall process for Comstock.
