Synopsis

The chipmaker is reportedly in talks to acquire AI chip developer Ambarella in a deal that could strengthen its automotive semiconductor business.

Dutch chip maker NXP Semiconductors is considering a potential offer to buy US chip developer Ambarella, which specialises in AI, according to people with knowledge of the situation, cited by the Financial Times.

The discussions are continuing, and it is not certain that they will lead to a deal. The report added that there might be a third bidder yet to emerge. The two companies have not made any public statements regarding the reported talks.

The report led to an immediate market response. Ambarella shares rose by around 19%, bringing up its market value from US$3.25 billion to nearly US$3.9 billion, while NXP shares fell by more than 3% in the trading session.

Automotive and AI Strategy Align

The deal, which, if completed, would significantly bolster NXP's business in automotive semiconductors, the company's biggest market segment.

NXP is a supplier of automotive processors for use in connected vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), industrial automation and secure identification technologies, while Ambarella's processors are based on low-power artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies for autonomous driving, surveillance cameras, and robotics.

NXP said it would earn US$3.5 billion in revenue in second quarter 2026, up 19% from a year ago, with automotive continuing to be its biggest revenue stream. The company is looking forward to a revenue of approximately US$14.2 billion for the full year 2026.

Ambarella, on the other hand, posted US$100.4 million in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, which was 16.9% higher than a year earlier, and its GAAP net loss was reduced to US$18.1 million, from US$24.3 million a year ago.

Semiconductor Consolidation Continues

As semiconductor companies seek to augment artificial intelligence capabilities with acquisitions, the reported NXP Ambarella purchase is the latest. A boost in demand for AI infrastructure, smart cars and edge computing boosts investment in the portfolio, especially for vendors specializing in high-performance chips.

The semiconductor industry's total revenue in 2025 is expected to hit around US$793 billion, and will surpass US$1300 billion in 2026, as semiconductor spending on AI chips, memory, and data-centre infrastructure keeps rising, Gartner says.

The U.S. continues to be the biggest market by revenue, and Europe has been gaining importance in automotive chip development, leading to increasing cross-border transactions in semiconductors for global supply chains.

The reported deal is part of a continuing trend of mergers among the world's semiconductor suppliers, which fuels industries such as automotive manufacturing, industrial automation, telecommunications and defence, for Australian businesses.

Australian technology and manufacturing firms are still highly intertwined with international semiconductor supply chains, across these industries.
