Synopsis

Former regulator Peter Kell has been named chair of Super Consumers Australia, bringing extensive experience in consumer protection and financial oversight as the organisation pushes for stronger retirement outcomes.

Peter Kell, former financial regulator and consumer champion, has been named the Chair of the Superannuation organisation Super Consumers Australia, representing consumers with superannuation savings.

Kell has an extensive record of involvement in consumer and financial regulatory bodies in Australia, and some of the largest ones at that. He has previously been a deputy chair of both the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and has been the chief executive of consumer rights organisation CHOICE.

He is succeeding founding chair Delia Rickard who was responsible for getting the organisation's public policy and consumer advocacy off the ground.

Chapter one

Leadership Change Comes as Super Sector Expands

The change comes amidst the growing retirement savings system in Australia. According to APRA, superannuation assets totaled $4.44 trillion in the March 2026 quarter- a rise of 7.9% on the same quarter a year prior. AUD 3.14 trillion was held in APRA-regulated funds and AUD1.06 trillion in self managed funds.

The Super Consumers Australia's consumer input to policy changes in the area aims to make improvements to the everyday members' outcomes at retirement age. The organisation participates in a number of topics such as fund performance, retirement income, and members' rights.

Chapter two

Experience Across Consumer and Financial Regulation

With Kell's appointment the organisation sees a joining of experience in the fields of financial regulation, competition policy, and consumer rights, at a time when the superannuation system remains to be a key policy interest in Australia.

Australia's largest retirement savings system (by assets), compulsorily paid employer super contributions make up a significant portion of retirement savings for millions of workers.

Australia is ranked sixth out of the Netherlands, Iceland, Denmark, Israel and Singapore in the Mercer CFA Institute Global Pension Index 2025 which examines systems for their adequacy, sustainability, and integrity; with the compulsory system placing one of the world's best.

Kell will oversee the organisation's governance and will also assist the group on behalf of consumers in discussions related to retirement savings in the country.
