Origin Energy is looking into a possible data breach after an anonymous hacker claimed to have accessed the personal details of over two million Australians.

On Wednesday, the company informed the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) of the potential cybersecurity incident and that the hack might include unauthorised access to certain customer information.

Origin Investigating the Incident

Origin said it does not hold any belief that customer credit card or bank details are part of the affected data.

Reports indicated that a portion of the leaked information contained names, addresses, email addresses, birthdates, phone numbers and billing history. As a precaution while investigating the incident, Origin said it is contacting all customers.

Hacker Claims Responsibility

The unknown hacker named himself John Doe and claims access to both Origin customer care systems as well as data from over two million customers. Allegedly the hacker gave Origin 14 days then will publish it if they do not come to an arrangement.

Origin has also notified the Australian Cyber Security Centre, the Australian Federal Police and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, with investigations ongoing.
