Synopsis

Analog Devices reported stronger-than-expected earnings and sales for the fourth consecutive quarter, propelling its stock to an all-time high and causing more than two dozen analysts to raise their price targets. On a per-share basis, the company recorded earnings of $2.46 on sales of $3.16 billion, topping analyst predictions on both measures. Part of the results was driven by strong demand from AI data centres, and the company’s outlook for next quarter also blew past expectations, with it expecting to earn $2.88 per share on sales of $3.5 billion

The American chipmaker’s stock surged to an all-time high after the company once again exceeded analysts’ earnings and sales estimates in the latest quarter, causing more than 20 analysts who cover the company to increase their price targets in a single day.

Four Strong Quarters in a Row

The chipmaker based in Wilmington, Mass., delivered another quarter ahead of what the market was expecting. The company earned $2.46 per share in the three months ended Jan. 31, compared with analysts’ expectations of $2.31. Sales totalled $3.16 billion, slightly above the expected $3.12 billion. Profit increased 51 percent and sales rose 30 per cent compared with the same quarter a year ago.

What is notable about this result, however, is not that it was a one-off. That was the fourth consecutive quarter that sales growth accelerated and the second straight quarter in which earnings growth also quickened. Put simply, the company is not just good, but better quarter after quarter after quarter, just like investors want to see.

Chapter three

The Growth is being Driven by the AI Data Centres

What’s behind much of Analog Devices’ success when it comes to AI? With more companies building sprawling data centres to run powerful new artificial intelligence systems, those organisations need special-purpose chips to keep pace with their AI needs. Analog Devices manufactures precisely the sort of chip that those are, as well as chips that control power and signal processing within such facilities.

Its products are necessary to help meet the increasing technical demands on data centres caused by AI, the company’s chief executive Vincent Roche said on a call with analysts. One analyst called a potential banner year for the company, saying it was riding both a wider rebound in the chip industry and an inexorable rise in demand connected to AI. That analyst increased his stock price target to $400 from $360.

Analysts Who Were Sitting on Their Hands Are Now Buying

They were also powerful enough to convert Wall Street. A financial firm analyst at Needham, one of DZC’s source analysts, upgraded his opinion on the stock from neutral to a strong buy and set a price target of $400. In part, he says, it’s because the stock had already surged sharply, by almost 45% since the prior quarterly report, compared with just 2.6% for the broader market over that span. But the latest results have made him confident enough to stop waiting, he said.

He cited a few specific reasons for his change of heart. Customers are purchasing chips based on how much they really need, not hoarding them, indicating that demand is genuine and consistent rather than a short-term spike. AI data centre demand shows no signs of abating. The company is also experiencing robust demand from the defence and aerospace industry, as well as from companies that produce equipment to test electronic components. On top of all good news, Analog Devices also said it was increasing its quarterly dividend by 11% to $1.10 a share, the 22nd consecutive year that it has raised the payout.
