Fire Shuts Down Qantas Terminal in Melbourne

On Friday evening, a fire erupted at Melbourne Airport, disrupting the travel arrangements of thousands. The fire led to the evacuation of everyone from the Qantas terminal. Fire Rescue Victoria, along with the airport’s fire crews, responded promptly to Terminal 1. Qantas aircraft remained stranded on the runway as thousands of travellers were swiftly evacuated from the terminal.

The Flames Are Extinguished

According​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ to Melbourne Airport, firefighters extinguished the fire completely. The fire alarms that activated in Terminal 1 prompted an evacuation. Emergency officers got the location ready after checking for hazards. Once the terminal was deemed secure, a partial reopening took place. Operations were allowed to continue. Passengers came back inside the building. The spokesperson refused to disclose the source of the fire or the reason for ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌it. Quite  ‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ a few planes that had just come in couldn’t let their passengers out. They stayed there outside with the people on board.

Stuck on the Plane for Hours

After an hour of simply waiting, Dixon mentioned that the pilot eventually declared they had resolved their backup plans. The planes waiting in line began taxiing. However, some remained on the runway two hours post-landing. Picture being confined to a plane for two hours after your trip concludes. You’re unable to stand and stretch freely. The restrooms are cramped. Children become irritable. Everyone is eager to disembark.

Qantas announced that arrivals and departures at the airport were delayed. No one could determine how long the disruption would continue. The airport displays indicated cancellations. Flights heading to Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide were called off. Melbourne Airport stated that prioritising the safety of passengers and employees was its concern.

Bad Timing for Travellers

Within the terminal, travellers needed to exit as the fire alarms began ringing loudly. They likely abandoned belongings at the gates, such as bags, snacks or coffee cups. After reaching the outside, they were left standing, unsure of when reentry would be allowed. The airport was packed with frustrated and bewildered individuals.

The aircraft stranded on the runway experienced difficulties. Staff were unable to escort passengers into the terminal because it had been evacuated. They had to remain patient, awaiting the signal from emergency responders to proceed. In the meantime, fuel supplies dwindled crew hours were. Travellers required meals and restroom access.

Melbourne Airport manages hundreds of flights daily. When the primary Qantas terminal closes, it disrupts everything. Late departures cause arrivals at other airports nationwide. Aircraft and staff find themselves in cities for their subsequent flights. The issues continue to ripple out well after the fire was extinguished.
