John Handcock hasn’t had a pleasant interaction with his mother since all the way back in 2004. This was a dinner they shared together as they laughed and joked. The meal cooked by a private chef took place at the office of Hancock Prospecting. The reason for their more than decade long battle. Hancock recently opened up about the struggle in a podcast appearance with The Guardian Australia. Going into detail how a dispute over the trust has left a lasting scar on The Rinehart family.

Chapter one

Gina Rinehart

Gina Rinehart is Australia’s richest person by far. She took over the company from her late father Lang Handcock. When Rinehart took over the company it was in a distressed financial position and turned it into the titan of mining it is today. The rift is due to a trust set up by Lang Hancock where 49 percent of Handcock Holdings was kept in trust for his grandchildren. The trust was due to be vested when his youngest grandchild turned 25. That is not how things played out however.

Three days before the trust was set to vest, Rinehart advised the children that accepting their inheritance could lead to bankruptcy. She proposed postponing the vesting date to 2068, by which time John would have been 92 years old.

"I immediately suspected something was wrong," Hancock recalls, calling the situation "disgraceful."He added, "It wasn’t until years later that we uncovered the full extent of the deception. That’s when we obtained documents revealing the origins and context of the letter we received just three days before the trust was due to vest."

Rinehart advised her son and the other receptions that capital gains tax would bankrupt them. A judge later found that was likely untrue. After a years long legal battle the Rinehart family are still at odds.
